January 20, 2014

Have I ever mentioned that I love being a missionary?!?!?! First of all I have learned that I don't have to be a missionary to be a missionary. And second of all I am way grateful for this time I have to be 100% focused on the Lord's work. I eat, breath, and read missionary work. I love it. There is a good talk by Elder M Russell Ballard called "Write down a date". Let me know what you think.

This week finally got cold. Cold is classified by the snot freezing in your nose. And the occasional frost covered hair. One day we were out in an area with a few less actives and an active family. It is quite the walk and it was pretty cold.  . . .

. . . .

Another crazy pday but it's all worth it. The gospel is true. Keep living it. Love you all and have a great week!

Sometimes we have to laugh at ourselves :)

Aina sanotaan, että suomi on hankala kieli, mutta ehkä se tässä tapauksessa on aika helppo?
(it's always said that Finnish is a difficult language, but maybe here in this instance it is really easy?)
The spruce is on fire = kuusi palaa
The spruce returns = kuusi palaa
Your moon is on fire = kuusi palaa
Your moon returns = kuusi palaa
The number six is on fire = kuusi palaa
The number six returns = kuusi palaa
Six of them are on fire = kuusi palaa
Six of them return = kuusi palaa
Six pieces = kuusi palaa

Hi, Sisar Heggie here from the Finland Helsinki Mission. I am reporting that the snow has stuck for a total of 3 days now :) Measuring at about ½inch. I'm in Finland :) It has finally started to get cold. Not as cold as you I don't think! This last week was another week of miracles. We met a lot of fun young people that will hopefully begin investigating. We have appointments with them this week to see where their interests are! I'm excited.  Our district leader told us we needed to pick up our "finding" and later that day we found 3 really cool people. Not investigating yet but amazing how prayers are answered when we are obedient.

This week was really focused on prayer. Meaningful prayers. Then in church yesterday I gave a talk on it.  Scary but fun. I don't know if I have told you before how hard it is to make a joke to a crowd of Finns, but it's tough. Their humor is different or something. After my talk the first counselor of the bishopric came and thanked me then told me he enjoyed my talk and that he was surprised that a missionary could work humor into their talk. I don't know which made me more happy, not passing out in my talk or actually getting Finns to laugh at my jokes!

The other night we had a lesson with a less active family we have been working with. They are a lot of fun and the daughter is 12. She wanted to make a snow dog so we all went out and played in the snow. The snow dog actually turned out quite well! Don't miss me too much I'm just here on the other side of the globe. You are in my prayers. I love you :)

Last night we had a fun appointment with a family in our ward. The dad is way funny. I always love hearing/having a good laugh. He then thanked us for what an important thing we are doing and bore testimony of the blessings of the gospel in his life. He is a convert, contacted first by missionaries knocking on his door and now he has a happy family and an eternal marriage with his wife that he adores.

The couple serving in Turku with us (Mortensen's) are a hoot. Elder Mortensen is always making a joke. He was talking to a man on the street saying how his wife is an angel. the man replied "Well congratulations, mine is still living!". Oh funny people!

The gospel is true. In sacrament meeting yesterday I had my eyes closed and looked up and saw the man who was passing me the sacrament when the sacrament came around. He is this cute old man whose daughter is less active. I love talking with him, he has a great heart. When I looked up and saw him I was just overwhelmed with the love of the Savior. I love these people. This is a blessing that has come because of the gospel. Because of our Savior and His atonement we can feel so much love and joy! I love you all, have another great week!

Terve Perhe!
Happy New Year!! Wow 2014 came fast. Crazy to think how time goes. Life is too good. Good to hear from you! We had a busy day today.  There is a member from our ward that left for America today so we told him bye and then went to lunch with a guy and his family that got baptized on saturday, then had some activities at the church and now I am here sending a quick email.

. . . . Yesterday was a way awesome day, met some great people. Contacted another referral this week and have plans to meet up with her and her member friend next week.  We went to talk to the family we took the Christmas card to but they are still gone on vacation.  We went to another ladies house that just had a baby to tell her congrats, turns out she knows a lady in our ward so we are planning to have FHE with them. We have a few less actives/part member families we are focusing on, a lot of which consist of moms and daughters so we were praying for ways we could reach them. What started out as a girls night/movie night idea turned into a way sweet fireside type activity. It was a cool experience to feel answers coming from Heavenly Father with very specific ways to help His children.

I thought of Moana and the activities she planned for us young women. I was blessed with great leaders and friends. Prayer is real.
 . . .

Oh and then I found fur for Trasie and Anbri. our next family photo is in the works.

Have a great week! the gospel is true, and it works. When you live it, you are happy. when you don't live it--you miss out on how happy you can be. Heavenly Father is waiting to bless us all and He leaves it up to our own agency to decide what blessing we want. I love you all

We had an investigator that stayed through all the meetings and looked like he was ready for a good nap by the end of it all   . . . . . .I love Finnish! It's way hard but it's way fun and I always find new reasons i love it. For example he or she is always hän. Girl? Boy? Hän. cute baby but you don't know if it's male or female? That's ok. don't know if someone is talking about their son or daughter. that's ok just ask his/her (hän) name.

Mom I have officially worn through my first pair of running shoes. Finland is a civilized country so I can just buy new ones here and it might be cheaper than having you send another pair from home.

We met with a referral this past week who brought along a friend. We now have 2 new solid investigators. We were at the store when we walked by a guy and his friend. He called out "sisters!" in English and it took a second but we turned around and started talking to him. Turns out he was baptized in Venezuela and has lived here for 3 years but doesn't know where the church is. He asked if we could bring him a Book of Mormon.  It's another start to something great! Heavenly Father is blessing us all around with opportunities.

It was great to talk to you all last week. Glad to hear everyone is doing well. Enjoy the rest of your break. Happy New year!!

December 16, 2013

I'm staying in Turku!! Sister Kunz will be flying home on Wednesday, pretty crazy that I have been out for 6 months now. Time flies and it is a bit scary my trainer is leaving me. This is when she said her language skills improved is when she couldn't depend on her companion to understand everything. My new companion is Sister Scellenberg, I am really excited to serve with her. We were in the same MTC group and she is great. I met her the first time in Provo at a breakfast we did and when I dropped her off at her house afterward I decided she is one that I would love serving with. In Finland Christmas Eve is the big celebration day so I am spending Christmas Eve with the family I told you about a couple weeks ago.

. . . . Hockey is huge here and the other day we were talking with a family and they couldn't believe I didn't grow up watching hockey. I explained the NFR to them which was quite entertaining. . . .

Hahaha I love the fish, thank you. I heard from my companion today about one of her friends serving in Zimbabwe who ate rotten goat because that was the best they had. I will be happy to be eating yummy fish from now on :) I did get Aunt Lisa's package and have been using my new pillowcase :)  . . . hahaha good that Riley's companions are getting good use out of his skills, there probably aren't going to be too many like him that they will get to serve with!

. . . . Actually before I come home I am going to have to find fur something for you all. I thought it was hideous when I got here but now I love it. And I saw some fur scarf things for little girls the other day and almost had to get them for Kambrie and Anbri.

It is good to hear from you all. I am excited to talk with you in a few more days! I love my Savior. I love this gospel. I am so grateful for a living prophet. I hope you all have a great week and remember to be an example and light in sharing the gospel. I love you all!

I GOT MY CHRISTMAS PACKAGE!!!! And I have to admit that I opened up the stocking and have already gone through some gold fish and jerky. I am excited to use the moustache ice cubes and believe it or not I will finally be able to set them outside to freeze! Turns our Turku is a lot warmer than Ely or St George or Cardston! Who would have guessed?! We have a little bit of snow on the ground, just enough to stick and light everything up. It is very pretty. I will save my presents for Christmas day ;)

Christmas is a huge deal here. Everybody gets together with their families which make it difficult to plan lessons with investigators but also people are home with their families as well as in the Christmas spirit! People are very approachable (for the most part) and love to talk about their Christmas plans and family. So yes, we are full of the Christmas cheer here!! There are a lot of different kinds of people so it is interesting to talk about Heavenly Father's plan for us and Christ. People are a little shy but eventually will open up.

Wow sounds like things are doing great in McGill!! That is way exciting that we have a young adult branch! I love to hear how missionary work is moving forward!

The FHE we had last week turned out to be awesome!! We talked a little bit about the plan of salvation focusing on families and we now have a new family to teach. The dad was asking good questions and we are headed out there again tonight. It is so exciting to teach. Mom and dad I can't tell you how much I love the people here. My heart is 100% completely right here right now. I love the mission work. Thank you for helping me to be here right now. The language is coming along. Have you ever seen those commercials for the never ending swimming pools? You keep swimming and swimming but feel like you haven't gotten anywhere but really you have, it just means you have gotten stronger? That's what the language feels like and yesterday I loved to hear from one of the members tell me my Finnish has improved a lot. I have learned that I just can't be afraid to make mistakes. People are patient and willing to figure out what I am trying to say. It comes from practicing and studying and the gift of tongues.

I find out if I am staying this Friday, I will let you know next week my change call. My guess is I will be here in Turku but I'll let you know if it changes :)  Thank you for your love and support and the package of Christmas from home! I love you all, hope you have a great week.
